NEWS & NOTES BY SUE FOUST
MIKE'S COMMENTARY AND SOME BITS OF WISDOM:
I BELIEVE
I believe-
That we don't have to change friends if we understand that friends change.

I believe-
That no matter how good a friend is, they're going to hurt you every once in a while and, you must forgive them for that.

I believe-
That true friendship continues to grow, even over the longest distance.
Same goes for true love.

I believe-
That you can do something in an instant that will give you heartache for life.

I believe-
That it's taking me a long time to become the person I want to be.

I believe-
That you should always leave loved ones with loving words It may be the last time you see them.

I believe-
That you can keep going long after you can't.

I believe-
That we are responsible for
what we do, no matter how we feel.

I believe-
That either you control your attitude or it controls you.

I believe-
That regardless of how hot and steamy a relationship is at first, the passion fades and there
had better be something else to take its place.

I believe-
That heroes are the people who do what has to be done when it needs to be done, regardless of the consequences.

I believe-
That money is a lousy way of keeping score.

I believe-
That my best friend and I can do anything or nothing and have the best time!

I believe-
That sometimes the people you expect to kick you when
you're down, will be the ones to help you get back up.

I believe-
That sometimes when I'm angry I have the right to be angry, but that doesn't give me the right to be cruel.

I believe-
That just because someone doesn't love you the way you want them to doesn't mean they don't love you with all they have.

I believe-
That maturity has more to do with what types of experiences you've had and what you've learned from them and less to do with how many birthdays you've celebrated.

I believe-
That it isn't always enough to be forgiven by others. Sometimes you have to learn to forgive yourself.

I believe-
That no matter how bad your heart is broken the world doesn't stop for your grief.

I believe-
That our background and circumstances may have influenced who we are, but we are responsible for who we become.

I believe-
That just because two people argue, it doesn't mean they don't love each other, And just
because they don't argue, it doesn't mean they do.

I believe-
That you shouldn't be so eager to find out a secret. It could change your life forever.

I believe-
That two people can look at the exact same thing and see something totally different.

I believe-
That your life can be changed in a matter of hours by people who don't even know you.

I believe-
That even when you think you have no more to give, when a friend cries out to you - you will find the strength to help.

I believe-
That credentials on the wall do not make you a decent human being.

I believe-
That the people you care about most in life are taken from you too soon.

Tequila and Salt
This should  be taped where you can read it every day.

1. There are at least two people in this world that you would die for.
2. At least 15 people in this world love you in some way.
3. The only reason anyone would ever hate you is because they want to be just like you.
4. A smile from you can bring happiness to anyone, even if they don't like you.
5. Every night, SOMEONE thinks about you before they go to sleep.
6. You mean the world to someone.
7. You are special and unique.
8. When you make the biggest mistake ever, something good comes from it.
9. When you think the world has turned its back on you take another look.
10. Always remember the compliments you received. Forget about the rude remarks.
So....When life hands you lemons, ask for tequila and salt and call me on over.

ADVANCED USERS CLASS NOTES:
KCnet Advanced Users Group: Every Wednesday
The starting time is 9:00 AM and we meet in Computer Lab 1 (The Big Room).  Leadership is Mike Foust and anyone that wants to jump into the fray.
Quite a day these past two Wednesdays.
We got rollin' with some pics sent by Advanced User viewers and others gleaned by Mike.  We then settled into our seats and took another wild tech ride.  Among the many 'puter topics covered we...

01/03/07
... reviewed an article from Worldstart about formatting memory cards used in digital cameras. We also explored what to do about stuck pixels on LCD monitors.  Both articles are available on the Tech Page of this Newsletter.  Look for the article called "Three Worldstart Offerings."

... looked at a new Google Project, SearchMash, the remake of the Google Search Engine.  It is in the Beta stage but available for using.  It has some unique features and is very good.  I always thought that Google was the best but this is even better.  Access and click on "Features" lower left first.  It adequately describes how to use the new concepts.  Try it:  http://www.searchmash.com

... started to explore the latest Google offering, Web Albums.  This is a Web Based Photo Album program designed to allow one to upload photos, arrange them into albums to be viewed by the internet world or designated as private for viewing by family and friends via invitation.  This is a nice program similar to Yahoo's Flickr.  It can be managed as a stand alone web based program or in conjunction with the downloadable Google Photo Management Program called Picasa.  We will be working with this program off and on in the next couple of Wednesdays.

01/10/07
... spent some time viewing mini videos from the Computer and Electronics Show and the Macworld Show.  Again these shows reveal a lot of new and inventive stuff along with some really ridiculous ideas.  The videos are available for viewing on CNET's TV site. http://www.cnet.com/

... Joe Marasco shared his thoughts and demonstrating expertise with a recent equipment acquisition.  He really likes this photo printer.  The photos Joe printed in his demo were good quality.  I think it was the Kodak 500 model and his comments about the printer were similar to or better than the Kodak ad which follows:

The Kodak Easyshare Photo Printer 500 brings the benefits of real Kodak pictures at home to virtually all digital camera and camera phone owners — with or without a computer. People who use CANON, SONY, OLYMPUS, NIKON, HP and other camera brands can experience the same great quality that Kodak Easyshare camera owners have enjoyed for the past two years.

With the Photo Printer 500, people can view and edit their pictures on a large, bright, 3.5-inch LCD screen — the world’s largest on a snapshot photo printer. The LCD screen can be closed, making it more convenient to move around the home or take on trips, as well as protecting it from dust.

The Photo Printer 500 makes 4×6-inch prints directly from virtually any digital media in about 60 seconds, including most popular memory cards (SD, MMC, CF, xD, Memory Stick), USB flash memory devices, PictBridge enabled digital cameras, mobile devices with Bluetooth wireless technology, and Wi-Fi enabled computers (optional KODAK Wi-Fi card is required).

Pictures are enhanced with Kodak PerfectTouch Technology, automatically delivering better, brighter pictures without the use of complex menu commands. Red-eye reduction is also available at the touch of a button. Your prints will last for a lifetime thanks to the Xtralife Lamination, which also makes them waterproof and stain-resistant.

Thanks Joe

... finished the morning with a demo of a free Screen Capture program.  John Way recommended  this gem to me after he discovered that our earlier screen capture favorites, Grab Click and Save or Grab Capture Save are no longer freeware or supported as freeware by the maker,  boumchalak.net.  John did a search and found ScreenHunter 5 Free.  It is better than the Boumchalak's used to be free programs.   It is easy to download and install.  Setup is easy and use is easy.  Read the directions.  I really like the ability to isolate a particular part of a page or graphic for capture, instead of being stuck with whole web pages as the capture which then requires opening a photo manager to crop the save.  Find ScreenHunter at:
http://www.wisdom-soft.com/products/screenhunter.htm  Click on the free offer and then decide whether you want to get mail and download or just download.
Thanks John

We did some other interesting stuff too, but you had to be there...

We had good snacks this past week.  Jim Linn brought some downright Tasty Cookies.  Gary Clark brought a great supply of Powdered Donuts.  Joe Marasco brought Crispy Tasty Peanut Butter Pretzels.  Kitty Laubscher brought an interesting collection of Cheese, Celery and Delicious Light Brown Fudge.  Don Miller brought very good Chex Mix and also Peanuts and Pretzel Mix.
These past four weeks of snacks have been brutal on my waist line.  I think our digital scales need recalibrated.

This class often becomes idea swapping and we learn by sharing our many experiences and I'll tell you all again, that really happened this week.
Thanks to all that brought in suggestions, asked questions, and helped with explanations.

NEWS AND NOTES WITH SUE FOUST:

I asked Roxanne Fryer one of ourKcnet Technicians to work up this recovery procedure for KCnet members who experience stalled email on the KCnet server.

If you are trying to download KCnet email with an email program and you get the message like (Receiving #3 out of 7 messages) and it just stays on the message # 3 and does not seem to want to retrieve it, that usually means  the message is very large and it may not come down through the dial up connection.

What you should do is:
1. Close your regular email program
2. Temporarily disconnect from KCnet to break the connection. Sometimes email programs will continue to try to download email messages in the background even though you have closed the program.
3. Re-connect to KCnet and go to http://mail.kcnet.org.
4. If you automatically go to our home page when you open your browser, look on the left side of the page.  Under the KCnet logo, click on Webmail.
5. Enter your name (which is your username) and password, and click on Login.
6. Your messages are shown.  If the size column is not shown, click on “Options.”  After entering “Personal Information,” go to “Index Order” and add “size.”
7. Look for any messages that have an M in the size column (ex. 3.5M).  These are the problem emails, holding up any messages from coming into your email program.
8. You can view and/or delete the file when you are finished reading it.  If you cannot delete the file, click on “Options” again and go to “Folder Preferences.” Click the down arrow on Trash Folder and choose “Do not use Trash.”  Then Click on “Submit.”
9. You can also view, delete, forward, reply, and create messages in Webmail. It is just a regular email program.
10. Keep in mind that anything you delete from here, will not be available for downloading  into your regular email program.  Anything left in this Webmail program is still on the KCnet server and will be available for you to download into your regular email program (Outlook Express, Netscape, etc.)
11. Close Webmail when you are finished.
12. Open your regular email program and get the remainder of your messages.

Note:
You can not delete messages from Webmail while you have your regular email program open. If your program is checking for messages and you are trying to delete them, our server gets confused and locks up, telling you “ Your mailbox has been locked by pop server” In this case you need to stop checking all mail for about 20 min. and the mailbox will unlock itself.

Until next time…
