MIKE'S COMMENTARY
THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE
NEWS & NOTES BY SUE FOUST
MIKE'S COMMENTARY AND SOME BITS OF WISDOM
Always Nice To Get Home Recently Sue and I enjoyed a couple of days on the road. In fact it was 13 days to be exact. We attended a three day ISP Conference in Baltimore and found time to enjoy the Inner Harbor too. We didn't escape Baltimore until we had Triple A to the rescue for a flat tire in the hotel parking garage. After a bit of waiting we were off to an Airport Hotel at BWI. We spent one night there leaving our car in their hotel parking lot for the next 10 days. American Airlines supplied a non stop flight to Miami. We rented a Hyundai and drove 113 miles to Key West. We didn't see too much on the trip down the Keys because it was very dark but we really enjoyed Florida's beauty on the return trip four days later. We will never forget Key West's Duval Street and the Ski Boat tour around the island which included an unexpected swim in the Gulf. That scenario is a story for another time.
Our granddaughter Casse Wert's wedding was the real reason we were in the Keys. It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon event performed at Joe Ellen Garden Center in Key West. The garden property is absolutely gorgeous and back dropped by the Atlantic Ocean whose waves splashed melodically onto a pristine beach.
Casse was a beautiful bride and her husband Jeremiah "Jake" Tate was equally handsome. The ceremony was moving and I felt honored to be with them. The brilliant sun caused my eyes to leak a bit. I noticed mothers, dads, other grand parents, relatives and friends also having a similar problem. Smiles and tears wore on our faces as we shared their joy and love.
Monday morning Sue and I departed the Keys enjoying a most gorgeous Florida day. It was hot, but a balmy ocean born breeze tempered the heat. We drove to Vero Beach for a two day visit with a friend who was a 1962 Lock Haven escapee. Then we migrated to Orlando for three days. We spent a day and two evenings site seeing, a day at "Rat Land" and the better part of a day with Sue's Aunt Betty, a native Pennsylvanian who relocated to Winter Haven some 15 years ago.
We ate, oh yes we ate -- Prime Rib, Maryland Crab Cakes, assorted Steaks, Florida Shrimp, Florida Crab Cakes, eggs done so many ways and potatoes and salads done equally different. Once in a while we lunched on hot dogs, burgers and an occasional beer. I was shocked to find that I must have burned many more calories than consumed. I arrived home eight pounds lighter -- gotta' do that more often.
Finally, last Saturday, we waved good bye to Florida, departing Orlando via a US Air cattle car. We met a similar connection in Charlotte for the final lap to Baltimore. Surprisingly all six bags had made it to Miami and back to Baltimore. Sue was convinced she saw our largest bag sitting all alone on the Orlando tarmack as we were backed out of the walkway slip.
We found our car right where we left it, untouched except for numerous bird deposits. Enroute we stopped at a roadside nursery to purchase some tomato and broccoli plants so that we could transplant them at my mother's West Milton apartment. Finally we arrived at Mike's Peak tired but quite happy with our journey and hundreds of photo memories.
The trip was very nice but it is especially good to be home. I think I like Florida, but probably would not these next few months. Ironically it was been hotter and steamier here in PA the next few days than it was at any of our southern locations.
The music:
I have fond memories involving the songs on this and the Tech page. They remind me of many special times I've spent with Casse. She and I have enjoyed sessions with player pianos from her early years up through this past year. We could sit for hours playing some of the old songs and singing with the tunes. I know one of her favorites is "A Bushel and a Peck." And I chose "And I Love You So" as a reminder of some of Casse's and Jake's comments and promises to each other during the "I Do" segment of their wedding.
If you need a laugh, then read through these Children's Science Exam Answers: Q: Name the four seasons.

4 session course Topics include using the browser to find information on the Internet, web and email addresses, sending and receiving email, forwarding and replying to email, bookmarks, using the address book, and more. There is always time for questions and general exploration. Beginner Windows 9x/XP

KCnet Users Group: (formerly
know as "Senior Net Learners" most recently called "Advanced Class").
I wanted to call this class "The Abusers Group", but Sue would not
hear of that. Attendees are persistent in their search for computer
knowledge. They ask great questions and present interesting challenges.
The cost for this class is $0.00 for members of KCnet and $2.00 per session
for non KCnet members. There is no set format for the sessions.
Occasionally we will take a specific subject and do a detailed study over
a period of successive weeks. Don't be afraid to ask questions.
The folks that have been attending for awhile are always happy for a review
and in most cases new or better ways to do things will surface. Questions
stimulate in-depth exploration with the usual result being an understanding
of how and why.
OTHER CLASSES:

Group: Every Wednesday The starting time is 9:00 AM on this Wednesday. We meet in Computer Lab 1 (The Big Room). Leadership is Mike Foust and anyone that wants to jump into the fray. Many thanks to Wayne Smith and Steve Stewart for the good programs presented by the past two weeks. Mike and Sue were goofing off gallivanting about Florida. We enjoyed the Florida sunshine and hospitable locals. Wayne Smith gave me the following account of
the goins on!!
Second week started with pictures of worlds
greatest granddaughter, a few funnies about bird flu and shared your emails.
Spent a minute revisiting Media player. One member of class showed
that media player can rip in mp3 as well as wma.
Quite a day this past Wednesday.
... discussed the latest spam scams, a Bogus Microsoft email that becomes a trojan and a DaVinci Code spam that offers free books. More info is available in the Virus Section on the Technical Page of this Newsletter. ... Looked at a detailed overview of the new Microsoft Operating System, Vista. It is still Beta but is now available for the general public to use and report. You can read the review and look at some visuals of the various interfaces by accessing http://blogs.zdnet.com/Bott/?p=66&tag=nl.e539. We did some other interesting stuff too, but
you had to be there...
This class often becomes idea swapping and
we learn by sharing our many experiences and I'll tell you all again, that
really happened this week.

NEWS AND NOTES WITH SUE FOUST:
The
most important thing I can tell you at this time is: Beware of electrical
storms. Thunder and lightning adorned the skies during this last
couple of weeks and played havoc with electrical and electronic equipment.
Modems, routers, and power supplies were the worst hit components of computers.
There were a few entire computers that were "fried" and rendered useless.
We've got double surge protectors on our equipment at home and still lost a router to the surge of a bolt of lightning. The house shook - nothing can protect against that. However, if we would have unplugged everything, we would have saved the expense and agrevation. Lots of activity at KCnet during these past weeks! We now have 3 graduates of the ICDL Program. Holders of the International Computer Driver's License (IDCL) can present this certificate to present and future employers to prove their knowledge of computers/computer programs, but more importantly, they've proven to themselves that they have computer skills worthy of the certification. Ruth Ann Pecht is the third certificate holder, with Wayne Smith and Scott Schaefer being the first and second. This is a great program that gives you added skills in a wide variety of computer programs. Check it out - from our home page, click on Education. The KCnet Techno Tots program has been a success. The pre-school students are darling. The program is vigorous. It's also educational, teaching about colors, shapes, sounds, and basic computer use. Physical activity interspersed with music and art have given these kids a good experience - and KCnet, too! KCnet is a certified testing center for a variety of certificates, now. During the last month, people from a wide area came to take health-related tests as well as technical tests such as Cisco and Microsoft certifications. These tests can only be taken in Centers that have passed muster for security, comfort, and professionalism. We are excited to have become a recognized Pearson VUE Testing Center! The list of tests we can host includes hundreds of professional certifications. Our own staff members Ron Calhoun, Tim Snyder, Steve Stewart, and Roxanne Fryer have become certified in some of the technical areas. In our case, Casey Friese of Renovo, is the instructor. We have opened the next study group and classes to the public - Casey will begin teaching classes for Network+ next week. And finally, I must say I had a most WONDERFUL time in Florida last month. We spent 2 weeks on the road, 3 days in Baltimore and the rest in Florida. It was nice to be back, but I'd go again in a heart-beat. There are lots of good things happening at
KCnet. Please stop in and stay tuned.
KCnet Board Of Directors Officers: President Bill Raco, Vice President Bob Rolley, Secretary Jon Ahrens, Treasurer Don Miller and Past President Judy Yoho. Other members of the board: Carolyn Carl, R. Keith Kelly, Paul Korn, Donna Lannan, Amy Lapriola, Tom Livingston, Ray McGill, and Rich Wykoff. |
