MIKE'S COMMENTARY
THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE
NEWS & NOTES BY SUE FOUST
MIKE'S COMMENTARY AND SOME BITS OF WISDOM
April!  We almost got through the month without April Showers.  Up here on the mountain the posies have very short legs this year.  The Daffodils are wearing long johns and slippers.  The trees are just starting to gain their green.  And April is just about history.
It has been different this year.  February was rather springy mild, March was harsh and now April is like a March. We have officially applauded Spring but it was short lived.  What is going on?
Robins moved in, departed, reappeared, departed and are now back.  Yesterday I thought I saw a bluebird but it turned out to be a small dove suffering hypothermia.
Hellllllooooooo!!!I suppose Spring will happen soon.
I'm sure looking forward to it.

What is it about May?
May has to be one of my favorite months.  Most months have a date, two or three at most, that deserve special recognition and special celebrating of sorts.  But May has so many special days to anticipate and enjoy.

Right off the gitgo we have May Day, May First, which coincidentally shares its day with Law Day, and Loyalty Day.  May 4 is National Day of Prayer this year.  Then comes, for some, May 5, Cinco de Mayo, The Battle of Pueblo.  Here is a new one for me, May 5 this year is also the Internationally celebrated No Pants Day.  Try this No Pants Day site too.  http://humor.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?zi=1/XJ&sdn=humor&zu=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nopantsday.com%2F
The 6th is National Nurse Appreciation Day.  I have a neat nurse niece or is it neat niece nurse named Bobbi, she is a super. (Try that set of Ns three times.)

For vets and all patriots there are VE Day, May 8, Armed Forces Day on the 20th , and Memorial Day on the 30th.  Of course we all have wonderful memories of our mothers and we certainly celebrate their day, Mothers Day, the 14th this year.  For many of us there are graduations to proudly attend, some spill into June.  Don't forget the Indy 500.  And, yes, There is the little known National Maritime Day on the 22nd.

Sue and I add two other important celebrations to our May lineup.  They are the birthdays for two wonderful grand kids.  Aubrey Ann Wert who celebrates on the 21st of May.  Our youngest grandchild, David Michael Foust, will be celebrating his 4th birthday this May 22nd.

Something extra special happens for us this year, our oldest granddaughter Casse Lynn Wert will marry Jeremiah Daniel (Jake) Tate on May 21.  Sue and I will join them and other family folks on the 18th, in the Keys, for a vacation and the wedding ceremony.  (We haven't vacated since the summer of 1972, many will recall that memorable year.)

So, if you see Sue or me appearing exceptionally happy or just dragging along you will know we just enjoyed one of those Special Days in May.

Hey, if you don't think there is enough to honor in May take a look at these dates.

SCHEDULED FOR MAY AT KCNET
ICDL WORKSHOP
KCnet offers workshops on computer skills necessary for the workplace (ICDL). These workshops include instruction in 4 categories of computer skills: Fundamental Concepts of Information Technology, Using the Computer and Managing Files, Word Processing, and Internet and Email. Individuals who complete the workshop successfully will receive an International Computer Driving License (ICDL) starter certification, and the opportunity to complete a full ICDL certification.

New sessions will begin Friday May 5, Noon to 2:00 PM.   Interested applicants can sign up for the ICDL workshop by calling KCnet at 893-8111.  The registration fee is $100 and includes all materials and testing fees. Advanced registration is required.

The ICDL certification program is designed to show employers that a potential or existing employee has the basic computer skills necessary to perform daily computer tasks. ICDL is comprised of seven modules that demonstrate competency in the following areas: Fundamental Concepts of IT, Using the Computer and Managing Files, Word Processing, Spreadsheets, Databases, Presentations, and Internet and Email.

Upon completion of each training module, the candidate will take a proctored exam. Failed tests may be retaken as often as necessary. Once all tests have been passed, the candidate receives ICDL certification. The ICDL is an internationally accepted certificate. It can simplify employment procedures and assures the employer that the applicants and/or staff have the necessary level of knowledge and competence to use common computer applications.

The ICDL workshop counts as 21 credit hours of ACT 48 continuing education credits, the full ICDL training and certification counts as 42 credit hours. ICDL certification is also worth 7 credit hours transferable to most colleges or universities.

Other Classes scheduled for May include the following:

KCnet Users Group:  (formerly know as  "Senior Net Learners" most recently called "Advanced Class").  I  wanted to call this class "The Abusers Group", but Sue would not hear of that.  Attendees are persistent in their search for computer knowledge.  They ask great questions and present interesting challenges.  The cost for this class is $0.00 for members of KCnet and $2.00 per session for non KCnet members.  There is no set format for the sessions.  Occasionally we will take a specific subject and do a detailed study over a period of successive weeks.  Don't be afraid to ask questions.  The folks that have been attending for awhile are always happy for a review and in most cases new or better ways to do things will surface.  Questions stimulate in-depth exploration with the usual result being an understanding of how and why.
We welcome new attendees from the Advanced sessions and our forever growing KCnet membership.  This is an advanced group and we cover a lot of territory. We are kind of free flowing.  You never know what will transpire.
It is not necessary for attendees to have their own computers but it sure helps with the learning curve.
KCnet Advanced Class computer knowledge and Advanced Class computer skills are necessary.

THIS WEEK'S CLASS SCHEDULE

KCnet Users
Group:  Every Wednesday
The starting time is 9:00 AM on this Wednesday, April 3.  We meet in Computer Lab 1 (The Big Room).  Leadership is Mike Foust and anyone that wants to jump into the fray.
Quite a day this past Wednesday.
We got rollin' with some pics sent by Advanced User viewers others gleaned by Mike.  We also viewed a number of  cute videos.   We then settled into our seats and took another wild tech ride.  Among the many 'puter topics covered we...

... we viewed the Google Video site again and downloaded the Google Video player.  We viewed a very good animated music video found by Jon Ahrens.  Take a look http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-5503582578132361295&pl=true   (you will want to download the google video player because it is much faster to play the Google videos from Windows instead of the streaming feature done when on site.  Once the player is on your hard drive you can save the Google Videos to your hard drive and then play them.)

... discussed the latest phishing scams, hacks, fixes and patches.

... viewed .wmv creations from the minds and hands of Jon Ahrens, Sue Clements, and Wayne Smith.  The presentations were very good and were created with the Microsoft program called Photo Story 3.  We previously  reviewed this program four weeks ago.  The program can be downloaded from Microsoft at:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/digitalphotography/photostory/default.mspx

... explored many freebie programs these past few weeks:
They include:
System Information for Windows Run the executable, and in a few seconds this little utility will tell you more than you could imagine about your computer's hardware, operating system, installed programs, and so on. What you do with that information is up to you--the tool doesn't offer diagnoses or advice.

Google Desktop Harness the power of the Internet's most popular search engine on your own PC. Google Desktop indexes nearly every document on your hard drive and then includes those files in your Google searches. A sidebar displays information modules that you select, such as current news, updated items from recently visited sites, and local weather.

Bartleby Like a reference library, Bartleby is home to several sources, including a dictionary, an encyclopedia, and various books of quotations. It offers audio pronunciations of words, a feature you have to pay for at other dictionary sites.
http://bartleby.com/

WriteBoard For collaborative editing, you can't beat WriteBoard. It lets you create, edit, and share documents with others--directly in your browser. You can even compare versions to see changes.
http://www.writeboard.com/

WordWeb is a cut-down version of the WordWeb Pro that is free for personal use. It includes a comprehensive English thesaurus and dictionary, and can be used to look up words from within most programs. Features of the free version include:  Definitions and synonyms  --  Proper nouns -- Related words -- Pronunciations -- 140 000 root words -- 115 000 synonym sets -- Look up words in almost any program
*Jim Linn found this dandy program for us.

We enjoyed super snacks again these past three/four weeks.
Not necessarily in this order we devoured:
Alberta Rice brought Honey Milk Balls - Oh my they were delicious.  This past week she brought a whole bunch of the original Mr. Stickies -- they are outrageous when heated.  Gary Clark brought some very good Vanilla Sticks.  Joe Marasco brought Chips Ahoy.  Sue Clements made a new recipe for us, Tuna Puffed Pastry, darned good stuff there.  Kitty Laubscher made some excellent soft tasty Brownies.  Dave Glossner brought those dark Pretzels.  We enjoyed Will Raymond's, Good To The Last Drop Coffee.  Some one snuck in some candies and I've probably lost a list or two somehow and in the process broke the scales at my most recent physical checkup.
One of the weeks in there we just enjoyed left overs.
We will celebrate Happy May Birthdays on May 10.  You know what that means -- singing and a special cake.

This class often becomes idea swapping and we learn by sharing our many experiences and I'll tell you all again, that really happened this week.
Thanks to all that brought in suggestions, asked questions, and helped with explanations.

NEWS AND NOTES WITH SUE FOUST:

I’m always looking for a reason to be here.  So, I’m sending this along as a reason:

In response to a survey, 20 percent of respondents said the Internet has greatly improved the way they get information about healthcare.  Respondents also reported they found great improvement in doing their jobs (24 percent), shopping (32 percent), and pursuing interests and hobbies (33 percent) thanks to the Internet.

Men and women found the Internet equally useful for doing their jobs and for shopping; the report said about a third of male and female respondents said the Internet has improved that "a lot." Women found the Internet most useful for finding healthcare information than men did, while more men than women said the Internet improved their personal pursuits.

Well, aren’t we surprised that more women use the Internet for healthcare and more men use it for “personal pursuits”???  The real reason for quoting the above information is so I can tell you that besides the normal classes to make computer use easier, KCnet is helping with a Senior Citizen’s session for Medicare signup.  Local Senator John Wozniak and the Office of Aging are sponsoring the workshop to be conducted from 10 AM to 2 PM, May 9, at Saint Agnes Church Parish Center.  KCnet’s wireless service manager Ron Calhoun will be setting up Internet service for the 4-hour workshop and we’re also supplying one of the 3 computers and printers.

Other news: two more of the KCnet Technicians have passed their full A+ certification.  Ron Calhoun and Steve Stewart have both earned A+ certificates.  Tim Snyder was the first to take and successfully pass, 2 weeks ago.  This is a big accomplishment, culminating over 3 months of studies and practice.

And, as a last bit of news, KCnet, as a test center for a Cisco Certificate, hosted its first “outsider” for a test today.  The person drove 2 hours to take the Cisco Certification test.
KCnet is now a certified test center for Pearson VUE, the respected center for certification of all tests.  There’s a list of about 100 different tests that we can administer at our Lock Haven office, including many medical, business management, financial, and technological businesses, organizations and systems.  Yours truly is the certified proctor for the KCnet testing center.

Until next week... !

KCnet Board Of Directors:   Officers are President Bill Raco, Vice President Bob Rolley, Secretary Jon Ahrens,  Treasurer Don Miller and Past President Judy Yoho.   Other members of the board are Carolyn Carl, R.  Keith Kelly, Paul Korn, Donna Lannan, Amy Lapriola, Tom Livingston,  Ray McGill, and Rich Wykoff.
