MIKE'S COMMENTARY
THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE
NEWS & NOTES BY SUE FOUST

MIKE'S COMMENTARY AND/OR BITS OF WISDOM
Verily I say unto ye..........
  Money

It can buy a house
But not a home

It can buy a clock
But not time.

It can buy you a position
But not respect

It can buy you a bed
But not sleep

It can buy you a book
But not knowledge

It can buy you medicine
But not health

It can buy you blood
But not life

So you see money isn't everything
And it often causes pain and suffering
I tell you this because I am your friend
And as your friend I want to
Take away your pain and suffering!!

So
Send me all your money
And I will suffer for you!
Cash only please!
After all, what are friends for, huh??

Bud sent this to me but you can send the money to me instead.
Mike

                                           Definitely Computer Smitten...
My husband and I are both in an Internet business, but he's the one who truly lives, eats, and breathes computers.  I finally realized how bad it had gotten when I was scratching his back one day.
"No, not there," he directed. "Scroll down."
Gary 'n Patti sent that one!

~HMMM~

There will always be death and taxes;
however, death doesn't get worse every year.
&
Politicians and diapers have one thing in common.
They should both be changed regularly
and for the same reason.

KCnet Users Group:  (formerly know as  "Senior Net Learners" most recently called "Advanced Class").  I  wanted to call this class "The Abusers Group", but Sue would not hear of that.  Attendees are persistent in their search for computer knowledge.  They ask great questions and present interesting challenges.  The cost for this class is $0.00 for members of KCnet and $2.00 per session for non KCnet members.  There is no set format for the sessions.  Occasionally we will take a specific subject and do a detailed study over a period of successive weeks.  Don't be afraid to ask questions.  The folks that have been attending for awhile are always happy for a review and in most cases new or better ways to do things will surface.  Questions stimulate in-depth exploration with the usual result being an understanding of how and why.
We welcome new attendees from the Advanced sessions and our forever growing KCnet membership.  This is an advanced group and we cover a lot of territory. We are kind of free flowing.  You never know what will transpire.
It is not necessary for attendees to have their own computers but it sure helps with the learning curve.
KCnet Advanced Class computer knowledge and Advanced Class computer skills are necessary.

THIS WEEK'S CLASS SCHEDULE

WINDOWS INTERMEDIATE CLASS
First & Second Sessions
August 2 & 4     9:00 -- 11:00 AM
Instructor:  Wayne Smith

KCnet Users Group:  Every Wednesday
The starting time is 9:00 AM on this Wednesday June 15. We meet in Computer Lab 1 (The Big Room).  Leadership is Mike Foust and anyone that wants to jump into the fray.
Quite a day this past Wednesday.
Among many other things we:
Viewed some cutesy stuff.  (Including The Floating Lady)  Access at:  http://www.izpitera.ru/lj/tetka.swf

Listened to a presentation from Sue Foust about the new KCnet email program to be launched soon.  What an improvement.  Some of the features include individual monitoring of spam, increased inbox size, Web Based Mail available, FAQs, Tech Assistance, and others.  A general mailing to the membership will be released soon.

Talked about the new Windows OS, formerly code named Longhorn, now called Vista.  The Beta version will be available on Aug 3 to select beta testers.  The public version is scheduled for sometime in 2006.  There is a quite a buzz about Vista.

Learned the new intention from Microsoft to allow Security downloads for any request but refusals to unregistered XPs for other Window download offers.

Played with 3 new Google offerings.  Take a look at:
Google Maps
http://maps.google.com/
Google Moon
http://moon.google.com/
Montage-a-google
http://grant.robinson.name/projects/montage-a-google/

Learned about two Netscape 8.0.1 features:
Multi tabbing and Multi home pages that open simultaneous with the browser opening.  Both are nice features.

Snacks:  Umm Umm Good!
Katie Carr treated us to picked at the right time watermelon.  Sue Clements brought fresh fruit and orange flavored KIT KATS (good stuff).     Kitty Laubscher brought fresh veggies and assorted cheeses.  Don Miller brought tasty bologna and cheese cubes.

This class often becomes idea swapping and we learn by sharing our many experiences and I'll tell you all again, that really happened this week.
Thanks to all that brought in suggestions, asked questions, and helped with explanations.

NEWS AND NOTES WITH SUE FOUST:

Accomplishments of the past and plans for the future were the items of discussion at the recent Board of Directors Annual Meeting for Keystone Community Network.

Accomplishments included expansion of service to include Mill Hall and McElhattan for wireless Internet service, additions to the downtown Lock Haven fiber optic network, and agreements with State College (SCASD) and Bellefonte (BASD) School Districts, as well as Lock Haven University, to provide discounted dialup service.  KCnet is a member of a consortium of schools, including SCASD, BASD, LHU, Keystone Central School District and Bald Eagle School District.

KCnet is now an official testing center for ICDL, International Computer Driving License.  This is a job readiness training program, used in over 100 countries of the world.  A grant from Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED), in cooperation with the State System of Education, is enabling this program.

Organizations to which KCnet belongs include Clinton County Economic Partnership, Downtown Lock Haven, Community Technology Centers Network of America, and Northeast Pennsylvania Better Business Bureau.  A second year of KCnet Computer Camp will be held for middle school students, August 8-12, and a monthly class for stock investment has been started.  eBay sales are going well.  KCnet serves as a drop-off service for people wanting to sell items on eBay.  KCnet receives a commission and community residents sell their unwanted items.

The Directors were supportive of a new e-mail system for its members which will go into effect in August.  It will enable member-selective SPAM filters and an improved web-based program.  Target date for the program to launch is August 8.  Virus Protection is already provided free of charge and a uniform SPAM filter has been in effect for 2 years.  The new program will allow self-regulation of unwanted e-mails messages.  Filtering is graduated from high degree of filtration to no filtering.

The House Committee reported that tax exempt status has been denied by County Commissioners and repairs to the building included roof and ceiling work.  Application for the Downtown Lock Haven Building Façade Program was approved for work on the second story, front of the building.

The KCnet Board of Directors changed somewhat at the July Annual Meeting.  Board President for 2005-06 is Bill Raco; Vice President is Bob Rolley; Secretary is Jon Ahrens; Treasurer is Don Miller and Past President is Judy Yoho.  A new board member, Carolyn Carl, also was added.  Board members’ terms are 3 years.  Other directors are Keith Kelly, Paul Korn, Amy Lapriola, Tom Livingston, Ray McGill and Rich Wykoff.

Front row: Treasurer Don Miller, Secretary Jon Ahrens, Vice President Bob Rolley and President Bill Raco.  Second Row are directors Keith Kelly, Donna Lannan, Amy Lapriola, Past President Judy Yoho, and Executive Director Sue Foust.  Back row:  Ray McGill, Carolyn Carl, Rich Wykoff, and Tom Livingston.  Missing was Director Paul Korn.

Last year’s officers were thanked for their service.  They were President Judy Yoho, Vice President Bill Raco, Secretary Donna Lannan, and Treasurer Don Miller.  Board member Dr. Fred Bierly, who served 6 years as Director, was also thanked for his contributions to the community through KCnet.

Board members are elected by the members of Keystone Community Network, Inc.  Officers are elected by the Board.

Until next week
