MIKE'S COMMENTARY
THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE
NEWS & NOTES BY SUE FOUST

MIKE'S COMMENTARY AND/OR BITS OF WISDOM:

AMEN - It is us - not them!!!

I'm passing on a bit of wisdom the Advanced Users discussed this past Wednesday morning.  We had been talking about the latest possible critical flaws found in the recently released gecko browsers, Firefox and Mozilla.
Of course it was expressed that there is an ongoing competition, a browser war to some, between Microsoft users vs. non Microsoft users.  In fact, to a degree, there is a friendly competition within our own group.
I found a forum of comments by various browser users venting their thoughts on the products and specifically the subject of browser security, security flaws, and repairs.
The most profound response was penned by ppiluk.  He is a computer pro and I think he has the handle on this argument and a good explanation of the actual problems in all computing.  I think it applies to all of us.  His thoughts follow:

"Not Surprising...
I love when things like this come to light, not because I am particularly committed to Microsoft products because I am a strong proponent of Open Source for the Windows platform. I love this because the zelots from both camps come out of the woodwork and you can see the insanity! If all consultants took their clients best interest at heart these issues would not cause such a big uproar! I have clients who use both browsers, clients who only use IE and clients who use only Firefox. I keep all of my clients up to date on all security problems. I find it such a poor argument when someone says they are safe because they don't have to pay attention. I can tell you that none of my clients who us IE have EVER had a security problem. Nor have my clients who use Firefox had a security problem! We need to look at the real problem...the stupid user!!!"

Ugly!  This is one to ponder.  I know you'll think about this story for awhile.

Everyone in the apartment complex I lived in knew who Ugly was. Ugly was the resident tomcat. Ugly loved three things in this world: fighting, eating garbage, and shall we say, love.

The combination of these things combined with a life spent outside had their effect on Ugly. To start with, he had only one eye, and where the other should have been was a gaping hole. He was also missing his ear on the same side, his left foot has appeared to have been badly broken at one time, and had healed at an unnatural angle, making him look like he was always turning the corner. His tail has long since been lost, leaving only the smallest stub, which he would constantly jerk and twitch.

Ugly would have been a dark gray tabby striped-type, except for the sores covering his head, neck, even his shoulders with thick, yellowing scabs. Every time someone saw Ugly there was the same reaction. "That's one UGLY cat!!"

All the children were warned not to touch him, the adults threw rocks at him, hosed him down, squirted him when he tried to come in their homes, or shut his paws in the door when he would not leave.

Ugly always had the same reaction. If you turned the hose on him, he would stand there, getting soaked until you gave up and quit. If you threw things at him, he would curl his lanky body around feet in forgiveness. Whenever he spied children, he would come running meowing frantically and bump his head against their hands, begging for their love. If you ever picked him up he would immediately begin suckling on your shirt, earrings, whatever he could find.

One day Ugly shared his love with the neighbors huskies. They did not respond kindly, and Ugly was badly mauled. From my apartment I could hear his screams, and I tried to rush to his aid. By the time I got to where he was laying, it was apparent Ugly's sad life was almost at an end.

Ugly lay in a wet circle, his back legs and lower back twisted grossly out of shape, a gaping tear in the white strip of fur that ran down his front. As I picked him up and tried to carry him home I could hear him wheezing and gasping, and could feel him struggling. I must be hurting him terribly I thought.

Then I felt a familiar tugging, sucking sensation on my ear- Ugly, in so much pain, suffering and obviously dying was trying to suckle my ear. I pulled him closer to me, and he bumped the palm of my hand with his head, then he turned his one golden eye towards me, and I could hear the distinct sound of purring. Even in the greatest pain, that ugly battled-scarred cat was asking only for a little affection, perhaps some compassion.

At that moment I thought Ugly was the most beautiful, loving creature I had ever seen. Never once did he try to bite or scratch me, or even try to get away from me, or struggle in any way. Ugly just looked up at me completely trusting in me to relieve his pain.

Ugly died in my arms before I could get inside, but I sat and held him for a long time afterwards, thinking about how one scarred, deformed little stray could so alter my opinion about what it means to have true pureness of spirit, to love so totally and truly. Ugly taught me more about giving and compassion than a thousand books, lectures, or talk show specials ever could, and for that I will always be thankful.

He had been scarred on the outside, but I was scarred on the inside, and it was time for me to move on and learn to love truly and deeply. To give my total to those I cared for.

Many people want to be richer, more successful, well liked, or beautiful, but, for me, I will always try to be Ugly.

 Spring Cowardice
I am afraid to go into the woods,
I fear the trees and their mad, green moods.

I fear the breezes that pull at my sleeves,
The creeping arbutus beneath the leaves,

And the brook that mocks me with wild, wet words:
I stumble and fall at the voice of birds.

Think of the terror of those swift showers,
Think of the meadows of fierce-eyed flowers:

And the little things with sudden wings
That buzz about me and dash and dart,
And the lilac waiting to break my heart!

Winter, hide me in your kind snow,
I am a coward, a coward, I know!

~ Leonora Speyer (1872-1956) ~

~HMMM~

If swimming is so good for your figure, how do you explain whales?

Show me a man with both feet firmly on the ground, and
I'll show you a man who can't get his pants off.

KCnet Users Group:  (formerly know as  "Senior Net Learners" most recently called "Advanced Class").  I  wanted to call this class "The Abusers Group", but Sue would not hear of that.  Attendees are persistent in their search for computer knowledge.  They ask great questions and present interesting challenges.  The cost for this class is $0.00 for members of KCnet and $2.00 per session for non KCnet members.  There is no set format for the sessions.  Occasionally we will take a specific subject and do a detailed study over a period of successive weeks.  Don't be afraid to ask questions.  The folks that have been attending for awhile are always happy for a review and in most cases new or better ways to do things will surface.  Questions stimulate in-depth exploration with the usual result being an understanding of how and why.
We welcome new attendees from the Advanced sessions and our forever growing KCnet membership.  This is an advanced group and we cover a lot of territory. We are kind of free flowing.  You never know what will transpire.
It is not necessary for attendees to have their own computers but it sure helps with the learning curve.
KCnet Advanced Class computer knowledge and Advanced Class computer skills are necessary.

This past Wednesday we:
We looked at some fun stuff and really laughed at a movie Joe Marasco sent.  It is called "Can't Dance" - drop me a line if you would like it.
We learned how to change the default setting for opening programs.  You can designate Normal, Maximized or Minimized.  You should have been there.
Discussed some Gecko Browser flaws recently discovered.  If you use Firefox or Mozillla you should udate them to cover the potential for critical errors and security problems.  The article in ZDNet will help.  http://news.zdnet.com/2100-1009_22-5674883.html?tag=nl.e589
we viewed a Power Point slide show prepared by John Laubscher.  It featured our group as we were four years ago.  But most importantly it showcased the different segues that power point allows for slide transitions.  John also included midi music with the slides.  Nice work John Laubscher.
John Way presented the second of two sessions about Power Point.  There were a few techniques left not covered, time was a problem.  John has agreed to do a follow up session in a few weeks.  Thanks John Way for the extra effort with the presentation.  It was a job well done.

It was Birthday week for April.  We celebrated birthdays for Richard Novosel, Jane Long, and Bev Womeldorf.  Unfortunately Bev was not available.  Of course the traditional Happy Birthday ditty was sung.
The cake was made from 2 dozen chocolate and vanilla cupcakes smothered in thick multicolored icing.  As you can see the baker was an artist and swirled the icing to form a face.  There was no intent to portray an actual resemblance to any of the celebrators.
We also enjoyed Potato Chips brought by Aunt Bea, Ivalou Bartley.  Kitty Laubscher supplied some fresh Veggies and Ranch Dip.  Joe Marasco brought Donut Muchins, some of which were filled with whipped cream.  Oh my!  I thought I was in gorgers heaven.  It was a good day for the eaters.

NEWS AND NOTES WITH SUE FOUST:

Did I say eBay?  Heck I should say “Uncle!”  At times I’ve felt like I can’t get much else done, and that wasn’t the idea.  We’ve had some good sales and some no sales.  All in all, it is a good addition to the KCnet diet of fun, education and service.

Look at some of our sale items:

If you want to track our sales, or bid on any of these items, our eBay name is kconlinemarket.  The beautiful queen size bed is in the bedroom of a vacation week at DisneyWorld – time share, one week rental in a beautiful apartment – sleeps 6 adults plus kids, first floor, fully furnished with pots and pans, even!  $999 for the week!

Until then…
