MIKE'S COMMENTARY
THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE
NEWS & NOTES BY SUE FOUST

MIKE'S COMMENTARY AND BITS OF WISDOM:

I wish for you to be...
Together with your beloved family and cherished friends,
May you find the food better

May someone love you enough to forgive your faults,
be blind to your blemishes, and tell the world about your virtues.

And may we live in a world at peace and with the awareness
of God's love in every sunset, every flower's unfolding petals,
every baby's smile, every lover's kiss, and every wonderful,
astonishing, miraculous beat of our heart.

Happy New Year 2005
May You Find Peace, Love, And Joy This Year

Life is an Echo
A son and his father were walking in the mountains. Suddenly, the son falls, hurts himself and screams: "AAAhhhhhhhhhhh!!!"
To his surprise, hears the voice repeating, somewhere in the mountain: "AAAhhhhhhhhhhh!!!"
Curious, he yells: "Who are you?" He receives the answer: "Who are you?" Angered at the response, he screams: "Coward!"
He receives the answer: "Coward!"
He looks to his father and asks: "What's going on?" The father smiles and says: "My son, pay attention." And then he screams to the mountain: "I admire you!" The voice answers: "I admire you!" Again the man screams: "You are a champion!" The voice answers: "You are a champion!"
The boy is surprised, but does not understand.
Then the father explains: "People call this echo, but really this is life. It gives you back everything you say or do. Our life is simply a reflection of our actions.
If you want more love in the world, create more love in your heart. If you want more competence in your team, improve your competence. This relationship applies to everything, in all aspects of life; life will give you back everything you have given to it."

Birches
When I see birches bend to left and right
Across the lines of straighter darker trees,
I like to think some boy's been swinging them.
But swinging doesn't bend them down to stay.
Ice-storms do that. Often you must have seen them
Loaded with ice a sunny winter morning
After a rain. They click upon themselves
As the breeze rises, and turn many-colored
As the stir cracks and crazes their enamel.
Soon the sun's warmth makes them shed crystal shells
Shattering and avalanching on the snow-crust--
Such heaps of broken glass to sweep away
You'd think the inner dome of heaven had fallen.
They are dragged to the withered bracken by the load,
And they seem not to break; though once they are bowed
So low for long, they never right themselves:
You may see their trunks arching in the woods
Years afterwards, trailing their leaves on the ground
Like girls on hands and knees that throw their hair
Before them over their heads to dry in the sun.
But I was going to say when Truth broke in
With all her matter-of-fact about the ice-storm
(Now am I free to be poetical?)
I should prefer to have some boy bend them
As he went out and in to fetch the cows--
Some boy too far from town to learn baseball,
Whose only play was what he found himself,
Summer or winter, and could play alone.
One by one he subdued his father's trees
By riding them down over and over again
Until he took the stiffness out of them,
And not one but hung limp, not one was left
For him to conquer. He learned all there was
To learn about not launching out too soon
And so not carrying the tree away
Clear to the ground. He always kept his poise
To the top branches, climbing carefully
With the same pains you use to fill a cup
Up to the brim, and even above the brim.
Then he flung outward, feet first, with a swish,
Kicking his way down through the air to the ground.
So was I once myself a swinger of birches.
And so I dream of going back to be.
It's when I'm weary of considerations,
And life is too much like a pathless wood
Where your face burns and tickles with the cobwebs
Broken across it, and one eye is weeping
From a twig's having lashed across it open.
I'd like to get away from earth awhile
And then come back to it and begin over.
May no fate willfully misunderstand me
And half grant what I wish and snatch me away
Not to return. Earth's the right place for love:
I don't know where it's likely to go better.
I'd like to go by climbing a birch tree,
And climb black branches up a snow-white trunk
Toward heaven, till the tree could bear no more,
But dipped its top and set me down again.
That would be good both going and coming back.
One could do worse than be a swinger of birches.

 Inner peace
This is a sure-fire recipe for achieving INNER PEACE.
I am passing this on to you because it has definitely worked for me, and at this time of year we all could use a little calm. By following the simple advice I read in an article, I have finally found inner peace.
The article said: "The way to achieve inner peace is to finish all the things you've started." So I looked around the house to see all the things I started and hadn't finished....and before leaving the house this morning I finished off a bottle of red wine, a bottle of white wine, the Bailey's, Kahlua and Wild Turkey, the Prozac, some valium, some cheesecake and a box of chocolates.
You have no idea how good I feel...

Now that the holiday season is over, you are probably spending more time at your computer.  Are you having trouble getting that new computer accessory or program to work properly?  Or are you experiencing problems with your current computer system?  We can help!  You may have known Keystone Community Network only as an Internet Service Provider, but the secret is getting out.  We have skilled computer technicians who are ready to address your computer woes.

Problems we can fix:
The computer is running slower than usual
Errors are displayed as soon as the computer starts or it will not turn on
The computer is infected with a virus or worm
Popup advertisements create a slow and non-enjoyable internet experience
The modem stops working
The hard drive has "crashed"
The CDROM or CDRW drive does not work properly
…and many more

Pricing:
The majority of computers brought in are repaired under our minimum bench fee.  This cost covers problems dealing with software repair and new hardware installation.  Computers brought in because of software errors or for virus and worm removal may require a complete system reformat.  A system reformat will erase everything on the hard drive.  A technician will back up any data that you want saved before starting this process.  Once your data is backed up, a technician will then reinstall and configure the operating system.

You will always be contacted by phone before new hardware is installed in your computer or if the cost of repair exceeds the original quote.  Our technicians can advise whether it would be more cost effective to purchase a new computer versus repairing your broken computer.  We understand that you are concerned about how much you spend on your computer.  This approach to computer repair allows you, the customer, to be in charge of how much money is invested into your computer.

Excellent Service:
KCnet is a leader in computer repair services.  We always provide free computer technical support over the phone.  If you would prefer to receive assistance by email, you can email our technical support team at:  support@kcnet.org.  We can provide you with PC troubleshooting techniques that can help identify your problems in a few simple steps.  If the problem cannot be resolved over the phone, or through email correspondence, then an appointment can be made to have your computer serviced at our local computer repair center.  We strive for a maximum three day turn around on all computers brought in for service.

You may have heard that KCnet only services internet related problems.  The truth is that we have the tools and personnel to service all** of your computer, software and hardware, problems.  Start taking advantage of these great computer repair services today!

** Issues that involve third party software or hardware devices may require support from the product vendor.  Our technicians will provide an explanation of the problem and will do their best to guide you to the answer.

KCnet Users Group:  (formerly know as  "Senior Net Learners" most recently called "Advanced Class").  I  wanted to call this class "The Abusers Group", but Sue would not hear of that.  Attendees are persistent in their search for computer knowledge.  They ask great questions and present interesting challenges.  The cost for this class is $0.00 for members of KCnet and $2.00 per session for non KCnet members.  There is no set format for the sessions.  Occasionally we will take a specific subject and do a detailed study over a period of successive weeks.  Don't be afraid to ask questions.  The folks that have been attending for awhile are always happy for a review and in most cases new or better ways to do things will surface.  Questions stimulate in-depth exploration with the usual result being an understanding of how and why.
We welcome new attendees from the Advanced sessions and our forever growing KCnet membership.  This is an advanced group and we cover a lot of territory. We are kind of free flowing.  You never know what will transpire.
It is not necessary for attendees to have their own computers but it sure helps with the learning curve.
KCnet Advanced Class computer knowledge and Advanced Class computer skills are necessary.

THIS WEEK'S CLASS SCHEDULE:

KCnet Users Group:  Every Wednesday
The starting time is 9:00 AM on this Wednesday December 29.  We meet in Computer Lab 1 (The Big Room).  Leadership is Mike Foust and anyone that wants to jump into the fray.
We had a small group this week but all had a good time and learned a bunch.  We covered bits and pieces of SP2, phishing, identifying spoofed domains, email hoax about cell phone number listings, PayPal, a number of cute sites and a nice site about life.  There are references about most of these subjects on the Technical Page of this Newsletter.
Food!  I'm still recovering from the Christmas Party of last week.  Katy Carr sent some of her Birthday Cake for us to enjoy.  Auntbea, Ivalou Bartley brought an apple and Cherry pie.  Now she didn't mix the apples and cherries they were separate pies.  Don Miller brought popcorn treated with Jalopena something, hot darn, --whooee.  And for dessert we chomped on  Dave Glossner's dark pretzels.
This class often becomes idea swapping and we learn by sharing our many experiences and I'll tell you all again, that really happened this week.
Thanks to all that brought in suggestions, asked questions, and helped with explanations.

NEWS AND NOTES WITH SUE FOUST:

Slow Computers Are No Fun

A slow computer is not a fun computer.  Viruses, spyware and adware are the worst culprits!  They can slow your computer to a crawl.

Most Internet Service Providers, including KCnet, have anti-virus programs on their servers.  All mail coming to and going from members is checked for virus.  If a virus is found, the mail is not sent; it is rejected and returned to sender.

Email is not the only way to get a virus.  Using File-sharing, such as that done when music is downloaded, is a major way to receive a virus from someone’s infected computer.  And, using someone else’s floppy disk or compact disk (CD) can also infect your computer, if the disk creator’s computer was infected.  Therefore, it is important that all computers have an anti-virus program installed and updated.  Experts estimate that half of the computers being used do not have up-to-date anti-virus programs on them.

The other 2 culprits, spyware and adware are usually sent to your computer through the Internet.  Some of them are loaded when you install a free program!  Spyware and adware are small programs installed on your computer that track your every move, give you popup ads and can even steal information from your computer.

If you haven’t installed programs to remove viruses, spyware and adware, you are just asking for trouble.  There are free programs as well as ones you can buy.  The free ones usually get the job done; they are usually more manual and don’t have as many bells and whistles, but they are free.  To find these types of programs, just put one of these words in your favorite search engine.  When you type in “anti-virus + free” into Google, you will get over 12 million sites that refer to free anti-virus programs.  One such program is found at www.grisoft.com.

No Viruses, no spyware, no adware, but my computer is still slow!

Here are some tips that computer users can use to improve performance.  Some of them are not for the novice computer owner, so if you are not comfortable making some of these changes, don’t do them.

If your computer is a year old or more, you will want to look seriously at this list.  If you are not one to make changes, you may want to take this list to a computer shop and ask them to do these things for you.

Computers are shipped to the customer with factory settings and drivers, meant to standardize the performance and appearance of a particular brand or model. So, right out of the box, there are some things you can do to improve performance. Try a few of these tips and you may see significant increase in speed!

   1. Clean Out Your System Tray
If you have a new PC, this is something to watch. If your PC is a few months (or even weeks) old, here’s a helpful tip: Eliminate every unnecessary application. These programs, that start up when you turn your computer on, drain your processor’s cycles and memory. That means a gradual slowdown, until you’re crawling.
   2. Update Your Drivers
It’s easy and fast, yet most PC users never bother. Keeping on top of video card and chipset drivers by visiting the manufacturer's site frequently can deliver amazing performance benefits. Do a once-a-month checkup of drivers. You’ll be happy you did.
   3. Visit windowsupdate.com Regularly
This is a big one. Also very fast and simple. The “patches” that are made available on a weekly basis not only provide protection for your PC, they are also designed to improve performance. Do this at least twice per month.
   4. Use Quick Launch
Common problem. Simple fix. Instead of cluttering your Desktop with shortcuts, just right-click the Taskbar, go to Toolbars, and make sure Quick Launch is checked. Then drag your favorite shortcuts to the Quick Launch bar for easy access, anytime.
   5. Speed Up Your User Interface
Today’s PCs often come to you with many graphical bells and whistles, and while they’re cute, they rob your system of fundamental power. Faster is better. Here’s our recommendation: Go to the Display control panel, click the Appearance tab and hit the Effects button. Uncheck the first two options, as well as “Show shadows under menus.” Use minimal graphics and go faster.
   6. Defrag. Defrag. Defrag.
A “must” for busy PC users, made simple. Here’s how: Regular defragmentation can improve your machine’s hard drive performance by massive amounts. To begin defragging, right-click your hard drive in My Computer, select Properties, go to the Tools tab, then click defrag. Do this religiously every month or so and you’ll enjoy smooth sailing.

Until next week...
