MIKE'S COMMENTARY
THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE
NEWS & NOTES BY SUE FOUST

Did it S*** again this week???
Nahua, that was just a bad dream, twice!!!

MIKE'S COMMENTARY AND BITS OF WISDOM:
I try to steer clear of subjects that stir the passions of readers, other than "Why I Love My Computer".  So topics involving politics and religion are generally taboo.  This one piqued my interest and because of the political climate and our concerns for religious freedom  in the USA and for others about the world I decided to introduce some interesting information.

It all started with a note from Bert Rice with the following plea: "March the 24th is support the pledge day. Everyone is urged to show their colors and even put up signs supporting the phrase 'under God' in our pledge of allegiance. Wear your red white and blue too."

I had never heard of "Pledge Day" so I did a little research to discover who was organizing this special day and was this an official movement of some kind.  I discovered that there isn't a lot of specific information on the internet about this.  There are a few newsgroups and blogs arguing both sides, some with great conviction.  It all boils down to the fact that the Supreme Court will again hear arguments about the validity of Pledging to the flag in public schools and the words "under God" included in the pledge. Interesting, they are scheduled to hear these argument on March 24, 2004.

Docket for 02-1624
No. 02-1624 Status: GRANTED Vide 02-1574, 03-7 Title: Elk Grove Unified School District and David W. Gordon, Superintendent, Petitioners v. Michael A. Newdow, et al. Docketed: May 9, 2003 Lower Ct: United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth
One can read the document at: http://www.supremecourtus.gov/docket/02-1624.htm

From what I can gather it all has to do with the a petition to the Supreme Court  placed on Oct 14, 2003.  This has been a continuation of efforts on the subject since the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals on 06/26/02 in San Francisco ruled the Pledge of Allegiance unconstitutional under the First Amendment due to its inclusion of the phrase "under God."

This current Supreme Court petition reads as follows:
Petition GRANTED limited to the following Questions: 1. Whether respondent has standing to challenge as unconstitutional a public school district policy that requires teachers to lead willing students in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. 2. Whether a public school district policy that requires teachers to lead willing students in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, which includes the words "under God," violates the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment, as applicable through the Fourteenth Amendment. The Solicitor General is invited to file a brief in this case on behalf of the United States. Justice Scalia took no part in the consideration or decision of these motions and this petition.

Now that brought my thinking to one of the many emails concerning this subject that have floated about the internet.  I am hopeful that the statements and the research are accurate.

GOD BLESS AMERICA!
How Could Fifty States Be Wrong???
HOW COULD 50 STATES BE WRONG ???
Somewhere along the way, the Federal Courts and the Supreme Court have misinterpreted the U.S. Constitution.  How could fifty States be wrong?

THIS IS VERY INTERESTING!
America's founders did not intend for there to be a separation of God and state, as shown by the fact that all 50 states acknowledge God in their state constitutions:

"Those people who will not be governed by God will be ruled by tyrants."

The following email was forwarded to me from Tom Livingston.  It did the job, it really made me chuckle.  It held my attention because it spawned interesting thoughts of the naiveté of many of us.  Then the real impact hit me.  Like all of you, I have received most of these chain/warning letters during my stint on the internet.  I proudly say that I have not forwarded any of them in hopes of receiving a pay off.  I am guilty though of sharing some of them to expose their ridiculousness in content or as jokes.  I have printed some of them in the KCnet Newsletter or forwarded them as emails to friends and family with an expectation that they would not be duped into forwarding them as truths to everyone in their address book.  The realization is - if these emails are not created and forwarded as entertainment then they are certainly spam. Their volume helps clog and slow the internet.  Read what some poor soul has done in response to his friends emails of frivolous subjects and warnings and enjoy the concluding rationale.

To all my friends, thanks to all you for sending me chain letters in 2003:
* I stopped drinking Coca Cola after I found out that it's good for removing toilet stains.
* I stopped going to the movies for fear of sitting on a needle infected with AIDS.
* I smell like a dog since I stopped using deodorants because they cause cancer.
* I don't leave my car in the parking lot or any other place and sometimes I even have to walk about 7 blocks for fear that someone will drug  me with a Perfume sample and try to rob me.
* I also stopped answering the phone for fear that they ask me to dial a stupid number and then I get a phone bill from hell with calls to Uganda, Singapore and Tokyo.
* I stopped consuming several foods for fear that the estrogens they contain may turn me gay.
* I also stopped eating chicken and hamburgers because they are nothing other than horrible mutant freaks with no eyes or feathers that are bred in a lab so that places like McDonalds can sell their Big Macs.
* I also stopped drinking anything out of a can for fear that I will get sick from the rat feces and urine.
* I think I'm turning gay because when I go to parties, I don't look at any girl no matter how hot she is, for fear that she will take my kidneys and leave me taking a nap in a bathtub full of ice.
* I also donated all my savings to the Amy Bruce account.  A sick girl that was about to die in the hospital about 7,000 times.  Funny that girl, she's been 7 since 1993...
* I went bankrupt from bounced checks that I wrote expecting the $15,000 that Microsoft and AOL were supposed to send me when I participated in their Special e-mail program.
* My Recision Phone never arrived and neither did the passes for a paid Vacation to Disneyland.
* But I am positive that all this is the cause of a stinking chain that I broke or forgot to follow...
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you don't send this e-mail to at least 1200 people in the next 10 seconds, a bird will poop on you today at 7pm.

My Suggestion:
Check them out before you believe them or send them on in hopes of being rewarded or with fear of their impending doom.
The list of URLs below are reputable resources available on the internet for validating the chain letters and email warnings of those mentioned above in addition to the many others that didn't make that list and those to be released tomorrow.

Spring Equinox Spring has sprung.
Spring Equinox, also called the Vernal Equinox, is the first day of spring.  On this day, which always falls on either March 20th or 21st, there are exactly 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness, everywhere in the world.  From this day on, the sun will continue to climb higher in the sky in the Northern Hemisphere, inching towards summer, and will sink lower in the sky in the Southern Hemisphere, inching towards winter.
Eostre (pronounced E-ostra) is the Pagan holiday that celebrates the return of spring and the balance between light and dark on, or around, the Spring Equinox.  Eostre was the Pagan goddess of dawn, fertility and new beginnings.  The Christian celebration of Christ's rebirth, Easter, is also celebrated around this time and got its name from Eostre.

Oh Darn!  It is going to be a Noisy Spring!!

CNN Reports: Swarm of cicadas takes aim at U.S.
Noisy bugs set to emerge in May after 17 years of quiet Friday, March 12, 2004 Posted: 2:26 PM EST (1926 GMT)
STATE COLLEGE, Pennsylvania (AP) -- After 17 years of relative quiet, Mother Nature is bringing the noise.
Periodical cicadas, a species of the grasshopper-like insects best known for the scratching, screeching "singing" of the males, will emerge this May, filling forests in more than a dozen states.  Almost as abruptly as they arrive, they disappear underground for another 17 years.
"Why do certain insects take only one year to develop, and others take two or three? It's just part of their genetic programming," said Greg Hoover, senior extension entomologist for Penn State University.  There are at least 13 broods of 17-year cicadas, plus another five broods that emerge every 13 years.  The last to emerge, Brood IX, was seen last spring in parts of West Virginia, Virginia and North Carolina.  This year, it's time for Brood X, the so-called "Big Brood," to surface.  Its range stretches from Georgia, west through Tennessee and to isolated pockets of Missouri, north along the Ohio Valley and into Michigan, and east into New Jersey and New York.
"This is one of those years we kind of dread," said Paris Lambdin, professor of entomology and plant pathology at the University of Tennessee.  "We had an emergence a couple years ago around Nashville, but nothing like what we expect this one will be."  No other periodical cicada covers so much ground.  And with hundreds of them per acre in infested areas, the noise will be hard to miss.
"In 1987, coming back from the University of Maryland on Interstate 95, when you drove through a wooded area you could hear the insects," Hoover said.  "This would have been mid to late June, with the windows down, and then it would shut down when you got to a field or a non-wooded area."
In rare years, a 13-year brood can emerge to add its collective voice to that of a 17-year brood.  "Out in the Midwest is where things get really hairy," Hoover said.  "Missouri, Illinois, Indiana have combinations of 17-year-brooded individuals and 13-year-brooded individuals, and they can have overlap."
There's no question that the class of 2004 will be a nuisance.  The cicadas will make plenty of noise, and adults are poor fliers that tend to bump into things.  But as swarms go, these cicadas aren't that bad.  Adults don't feed on leaves, so they won't strip the trees, but they do lay their eggs in twigs.
"The females, once mated, will lay pockets of eggs along twigs that will cause structural weakening of those twigs," Hoover said.  "Eventually they may drop off and fall to the ground, the nymphs will drop off and fall to the soil, and that's where this species is for the next 17 years."

HEY!  A FUN PLACE TO BE:
I have to tell you about a special Computer Show coming soon to a location reachable by all of us.  It is the Greater Baltimore Hamboree and Computerfest  held annually at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium, Md.  This is a two day event and it is a WHOOPERDOO!!  The dates this year are March 27 and 28.  Sue, my brother Hank, and I go to it every year. We Go Friday and return Sunday.  We stay close by and enjoy the fine dining.  At least one evening, weather permitting,  we ride the train to the Inner Harbor.  Unfortunately circumstances beyond my control and my wildest dreams will keep us from attending this year.  But I still encourage the venture for at least one day for any computer enthusiast.

Even though it is billed as a  HAMFEST, it is primarily for computer connoisseurs and nerds.  The "Ham" in Hamfest refers to Ham Radio Operators.  Somehow ham operators and computer folks kinda jive.  It must have to do with the wires, and the solder,  and the cables, and the space (the cyber kind).  Not to mention nuts, bolts, batteries, power supplies, screws, boards, books, relays, capacitors, diods, tools, rheostats, boosters, switchers, printers, scanners, modems, phones, boxes, routers, walkie-talkies, pins, needles, office supplies, cases, rope, handicap scooters, antennas, clothes, along with other gimmicks and paraphernalia too numerous and/or trivial to mention.

Get the picture, this is a one-of-a-kind multi-faceted event .  There is retail, wholesale, used, and abused stuff all over the place. One might even find some black market stuff.  You know, HOT. One can tell the HOT stuff because the seller either whispers the words in your ear or hands you a piece of self destructing paper that says "AS IS- DO NOT REGISTER OR APPLY FOR WARRANTY".  Keep in mind, "buyer beware".

There have to be more than a thousand venders ranging from slippery looking weasels selling from the trunk of a beat up multi-colored '64 Fairlane station wagon to name recognized computer assemblers, warehousers, and manufacturers who have step vans and large trucks for displaying their items for sale.  There are three large buildings where venders have booths/tables to display and sell their wares.  They even assemble "made to your specs"  computers for purchase, as you watch.  There are unbelievable prices for new units and parts.  In addition to the indoor retail and used stuff  there are up to 600 outdoor spaces in the main parking lot featuring everything imaginable, electronic and otherwise.  The food isn't shabby either, considering it is fast food.  Try the crab soup.

ATM machines are available on the grounds and most vendors enjoy dealing in cash.  They like hagglers too.  My brother is a master haggler.  By the way I've considering renting my brother Hank for short periods of time to those who cannot haggle.

Tickets at the gate are $6.00 per day.   One can get a two-day pass for $10.00 if ordered in advance.  Drop me a line for directions.  mfoust@kcnet.org

KCnet Users Group:  (formerly know as  "Senior Net Learners" most recently called "Advanced Class").  I  wanted to call this class "The Abusers Group", but Sue would not hear of that.  Attendees are persistent in their search for computer knowledge.  They ask great questions and present interesting challenges.  The cost for this class is $0.00 for members of KCnet and $2.00 per session for non KCnet members.  There is no set format for the sessions.  Occasionally we will take a specific subject and do a detailed study over a period of successive weeks.  Don't be afraid to ask questions.  The folks that have been attending for awhile are always happy for a review and in most cases new or better ways to do things will surface.  Questions stimulate in-depth exploration with the usual result being an understanding of how and why.
We welcome new attendees from the Advanced sessions and our forever growing KCnet membership.  This is an advanced group and we cover a lot of territory. We are kind of free flowing.  You never know what will transpire.
It is not necessary for attendees to have their own computers but it sure helps with the learning curve.
KCnet Advanced Class computer knowledge and Advanced Class computer skills are necessary.

THIS WEEK'S CLASS SCHEDULE:
Intermediate (Windows all versions)
First & Second Sessions
March 23 & 25  - 5:30 -7:30 pm
Instructor:  Tim Snyder

KCnet Users Group:  Every Wednesday
The starting time is 9:00 AM on this Wednesday March 24.  We meet in Computer Lab 1 (The Big Room).  Leadership is Mike Foust and anyone that wants to jump into the fray.
Quite a day we had last Wednesday.  Of course it was St. Patrick's Day.  Most wore green.  In fact there are some pics snapped of the group in action.  Ken Condo took most of them, thanks Ken.  CLICK HERE TO SEE PICS
Some accused John and Kitty Laubscher of bringing the snow back with them from their two + weeks in Kentucky and one of the Carolinas.  By the way, John turned another year while away.  We spent some time viewing a couple of cute sites and then got to work.
We discussed a new variation of Bagel.  You can read about it on the Tech page.  We did a quick review of the new Weather Program.  Most everyone in the group has installed it and to a person we like it.  It is called Weather Watcher and it can be download at http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,16723,tk,Top10,00.asp
Tom Livingston said that his group at Salona were trying to scan for viruses by using the free scan from Trend Micro - Housecall.  http://housecall.trendmicro.com/  Some experienced failure.  After downloading and installing the the little program necessary to do a virus scan, the people could not get a scan going.  We tried it with the teaching machine and experienced the very same problem.  Mike related that it is necessary to disable any other anti virus program on the machine.  We also entertained the thought that the program would not run if the user was accessing Trend Micro with Netscape.  We will work on the problem and report back in a couple of weeks.
Mike demonstrated a new music player that he and Jon Ahrens had been exploring.  It is called vanBasco's Karaoke Player.  It is free and is available at: http://www.vanbasco.com/   The player is designed to do Karaoke but also plays midis.  It has some very neat features.  The user can change the key and speed of the songs being played and then save them as new songs. It also displays lyrics if they were saved with the midi or the.kar extension files. It also shows piano keys and it shows the various instruments featured in the file.  It is one of the neatest music programs I've seen.  There are some cautions.  First make sure that you uncheck the feature that will make the player the default player for your internet pages. You will want to keep Crescendo or what ever you currently use.  Keep it operating in windows situations only.  Also choose it to play only the extensions .mid, .midi, .kar and nothing else. You make these choices as the player is installing itself.  You will love it.  It loads fast and has good options that  are easy to set up.

St. Patrick's Day, oh yes, we had food.  Bert Rice ordered a special cake from BiLo and she brought it.  She also made a very lo-cal 7Up salad especially for Jon and it was obvious that he appreciated her effort, so did the rest of us.  Mary Dutton made another great tasting Jello dish, green of course.  Peg Masden baked some special Peanut Butter Cookies.  Joan Summerson labeled some extra-tasty cookies with a KCnet logo.  Kitty, just back from the south brought some Lil Debbies.  We also had some of Dave Glossner's double browned pretzels.
This class often becomes idea swapping and we learn by sharing experiences and I'll tell you all again, that really happened this week.

NEWS AND NOTES WITH SUE FOUST:

This Bagel was not for eating!
We were back up in the number of viruses trying to infect our members this week.  A few over 6,000 per day for several days in a row.  That keeps our equipment busy and during certain times of the day, that’s just about all our machines get done – rerouting and defanging viruses!  Several times last week, there were very slow connections and service.  When it’s a choice between turning off the virus-killer or giving people faster service, I’m sorry but I have to go along with killing viruses.

We did have some ups and downs with HyperNet.  At least once, it got turned off for everybody, making people who pay for the faster service a little miffed.  We’ll try not to do it again.  I’m also thinking it works much better with Internet Explorer, but there will be an upgrade very soon which may address that issue.  If you have HyperNet and you’re using Netscape, if you can bear doing it, use Internet Explorer (don’t click on Yes, you want I.E. to be your default browser) and see if you notice a difference.

Kerry Clausen, our Education Coordinator and a Technician, is leaving us for better turf.  Actually, this new job will give Kerry a chance to prove his ability as a network administrator.  And, what better time in life to be able to become more well-rounded.  He’ll be leaving in early April.  Kerry has been with us since he started coming into the Advanced Class to talk and teach about digital cameras over 4 years ago – when he was in 10th grade.  You know what we say – the harder the topic, the younger the teacher!  Kerry’s shoes will be tough to fill but we’re going to try.

We’re getting closer to a contract for new Internet Service.  It’s with the other guy’s attorney now.  We’re anxious.  You are too.

Until next week...

Ray McGill, owner of Nittany Travel, is the President of KCnet; William Raco is Vice-President; Judy Yoho is Secretary and Donald C.  Miller of North Bend is Treasurer.  Other members of the board are Fred Bierly, Donna Gebhardt Lannan, Earl Keen, R.  Keith Kelly, Paul Korn, Amy Lapriola, Paddy O’Hara-Mays, Bob Rolley, and Rich Wykoff.
