New anthrax worm is a dud. By Robert Lemos from Tech News First, CNET A new computer worm that attempts to ride on the coattails of the anthrax scare emerged Tuesday, but numerous errors on the part of the program's author seem to have scuttled any chance the worm has to spread. The worm is technically known as VBS.VBSWG.AF, or more colloquially as "Antrax." It was discovered in an e-mail with a subject line that misspelled the name of the deadly anthrax disease as "Antrax." The e-mail also contains a message written in Spanish. get the full story. http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1003-200-7549706.html?tag=dd.ne.dht.nl-sty.0

SirCam worm fails to reactivate. By Robert Lemos from Tech News First, CNET A bug in the code of the SirCam worm has prevented the malicious program from reactivating its payload, which would have deleted files on infected PCs Tuesday, according to antivirus company Sophos. Code in the worm, which continues to spread among unprotected computers connected to the Internet, would have turned programs attempting to execute on Oct. 16 into a crap shoot: Running an application on an infected PC would have deleted all files on the computer 5 percent of the time. http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1003-200-7544896.html?tag=dd.ne.dht.nl-sty.0

Why the RIAA owes us all an apology David Coursey, Executive Editor, AnchorDesk Thursday, October 18, 2001 The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) should issue a public apology for its attempt last week to lump music swappers together with terrorists--criminals worthy of special efforts and restrictions on civil liberties in order to bring them to justice. http://www.zdnet.com/anchordesk/stories/story/0,10738,2818346,00.html

Video Card Upgrades By Michael Vincent If you're looking for a new video card, here are some quick tips to help you get started. 1) If you don't play any 3D games, you don't need a super-charged 3D card. It's like having a drag racer for commuting to work. Hmmmm. Nah! 2) If you do play a lot of games, buy a name brand card. Clones are not always supported. The best way to find out which card is best is to check out a reputable gaming site (there are a million of them) and find the most recommended. These guys test these things for a living. 3) More memory is always better! 4) Don't just rely on the box for info! The bar charts on the box are skewed with useless information. 5) If you can, go with an AGP card over a PCI. This has to do with the type of slot in your PC. AGP is specifically made for graphic cards. 6) If you have a flat screen, look for AGP with OpenLDI connectors.
Filing with Outlook Express This tip is for Outlook Express. From Dummies Daily To save a message in Outlook Express, you stick it in a folder. You start out with folders named Inbox, Outbox, Sent Items, and Deleted Items. To make a new folder, choose File, Folder, New Folder from the menu and give the folder a name. (Make one called Personal, just to give it a try.) The new folder appears on the list of folders on the left side of the Outlook Express window. Move messages into a folder by clicking a message header and dragging it over to the folder name or choosing Edit, Move to Folder from the menu. If you have a lot of messages to file, you can even create folders within a folder, to keep things organized.

Desk Flag A nice download From Bert Rice. We featured this download in the Advanced class. It is nice DeskFlag places an animated United States flag on your screen. The flag waves in the lower-right corner as you use your computer. DeskFlag was created after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and is dedicated to the memory of the victims. We hope that in some small way, using this program helps people demonstrate their condemnation of that senseless act.. Bert said, "I downloaded the deskflag and the registry prot with no problem. But there is a glitch with the flag. I have to disable it to use Freecell and a Solitaire game disc I have installed. On Freecell the hourglass blinks rapidly at the end of the cursor continuously and in the Solitaire game I get the illegal procedure message. http://www.deskflag.com/
